Calvin M. Dolan, Sr.

Calvin “Cal” M. Dolan Sr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at his residence in Audubon, PA; he was formerly a longtime resident of Upper Merion. Calvin was 92. Calvin was the husband of 68 years to the late Mildred (Mateer) Dolan, who died in June 2016. Born in Lawrence, MA on November 18, 1924, Calvin was the only child of the late Howard Irving and Mildred Stuart (nee Morgan) Dolan. Cal attended Lawrence High School in Massachusetts where he won the prestigious Hood Medal. He also attained the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. Calvin attended Colby College on a track scholarship. He participated in the V-12 program and served in WWII as a naval officer in the South Pacific. After graduating from Colby, Cal began his career as a chemist with American Viscose in Meadville, PA. In 1958, he relocated to King of Prussia to work in the Aerospace Division of General Electric Company. While employed by General Electric, Calvin was credited with numerous inventions and applications for “heat shields” on NASA re-entry vehicles. He was very active in the space program during the early Mercury and Gemini years. After his career with GE, he went back to school for his teaching certificate in Chemistry. While living in Upper Merion, he was an active member of the Kiwanis Club. Calvin, together with Mildred, enjoyed spending time at their beach house in Avalon, NJ; traveled across the United States, to Europe, and to Central and South America. They worked together to finish the New York Times crossword puzzles, played scrabble and spent hours reading. Calvin loved gardening; creating pieces of art for family and friends in which he specialized in slate carvings; and, while at Shannondell, participated in the billiards and card clubs. He was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. Calvin is survived by his loving family: his children, Mark Dolan (Linda), Eric Bruce Dolan (Karen), Martha McGlinchey (Terence) and Janet Bowes (Peter); grandchildren: Mara, Jennifer, Brian, Ellen, Colleen, Bridget, Colby and Amelia; and great-grandchildren: Samantha, Perico, Collin, Rufus and Evelyn. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Calvin Dolan, Jr. in 2013. Funeral services will be held privately.
