Charles Edward McGonigle, 84, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 17, 1937, to Ann (McCormick) and John McGonigle. He was the husband of Nora McGonigle for 62 years. Charles enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Iowa as an electro-mechanic. Soon after his honorable discharge he met the love of his life, Nora, who had recently relocated from Ireland. They married on October 8, 1960. He worked as a printer prior to joining the Philadelphia Police Department in 1962, where he attained the rank of detective. During this time, he earned an associate degree in criminal justice. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. After twenty years on the force, he worked as an investigator with a Philadelphia law firm. Later he pursued a new adventure by starting his own towing and recovery business which he operated until retirement. Charles and Nora raised their family in Philadelphia and spent many summers at the South Jersey Shore. His early Navy career inspired his love for travel. Some of his favorite destinations included Ireland, Aruba, and Florida. He loved playing board games, cards, and chess with his grandchildren. He appreciated American history and was always interested in a good read or discussion. Close friends and family will remember Charles’ passion for friendly conversation and debate. Charles took pride in being part of his community as he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Knights of Columbus, St. Leo's Council, where he achieved Third Degree and served as Grand Knight. He was also an active member of St. Leo's Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church. Charles is survived by his wife Nora; Daughters, Noreen (Christopher), Theresa (Harry), and Elaine; Daughter-in-law, Colleen; Grandchildren, Matthew (Meghan), Benjamin, Crystal (Robert), Brian, Kevin, Paul, Megan, Harry, Kyle, Sean, Jessica, and Sydney; Great Granddaughters, Elinor “Nell”, Ada, Anastasia, and Victoria; Brother, Andy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son, Charlie; Siblings, Mary, Helen, John, Nancy, Thomas, Kevin, and Frank. A public viewing will be held on Friday, April 8, 2022, from 9:45-10:45 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, both held at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 7056 Tulip Street, Philadelphia, PA 19135. His interment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem, PA.
