Charles F. Murphy

Listen to Obituary

Charles F. Murphy (“Charlie”), 81, of Blue Bell, passed away peacefully on May 13, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Patty (née Scherer); devoted father of Sean (Pam), Kathleen (Adam), and Brian (Laura); loving brother of Joe, Ed, Jean, and Pat; proud and cherished “Chief” to Kate, Violet, Charlotte, Patrick, and Schuyler; and a treasured uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Charlie was a member of the first four-year graduating class of Bishop McDevitt High School, where he distinguished himself both in the classroom and in athletics, earning varsity letters in Cross Country and Track for the Royal Lancers. He carried that same dedication and spirit to St. Joseph’s University, where he again earned varsity letters competing for the Hawks.

After honorably serving in the National Guard, Charlie built a successful professional career, becoming a CPA and earning his MBA from Temple University. While working full-time at Main LaFrentz & Co., he spent countless evenings helping his brother Joe and business partner Eugene establish a clinical laboratory. Charlie eventually joined the business full-time, helping to grow and lead DeKalb Laboratories. Through his steady leadership, deep integrity, and commitment to people, he helped create not only a successful company, but also a culture centered on excellence, loyalty, and respect.

When his chapter in the laboratory industry came to a close, Charlie devoted even more of himself to serving others. Whether helping with the Irish Memorial, serving as treasurer for a friend’s political campaign, volunteering with The Giving Tree, serving on boards including Chestnut Hill Academy and Whitemarsh Country Club, or simply showing up whenever someone needed a hand, Charlie lived a life rooted in generosity. His greatest joy was helping others, especially children and families.

As proud as he was of his professional accomplishments and community involvement, Charlie’s heart always belonged to his family and friends. He was a constant presence in the lives of those he loved — cheering from the sidelines at games, applauding from theater audiences, or standing along the banks of the Schuylkill River in support of his children’s pursuits. A lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan and season ticket holder for more than 50 years, Charlie loved traditions and togetherness. He delighted in hosting holidays for his large extended family, carrying skis for children, nieces, and nephews on annual family trips, and lingering around the table telling stories with a glass of wine in one hand and a cigar in the other.

Charlie was also an avid reader and movie enthusiast who treasured his morning summer walks on the beach in Sea Isle, where he made a point to wish everyone a cheerful “good morning.”

More than anything, Charlie will be remembered for the way he made people feel — welcomed, supported, valued, and loved. His warmth, generosity, gentle spirit, and unmistakable smile will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

Family and Friends are invited to Charlie’s visitation from 10am to 10:50am on Thursday, May 21, 2026, followed by his Funeral Mass beginning at 11am, both held at St. Rose of Lima Church 424 S.
