Charles E. “Ed” Smith passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Willow Tree Manor in Charles Town, WV. He was 92. Mr. Smith had been living with his daughter in West Virginia but was a previous resident of E. Norriton, PA. He was a heating mechanic who co-owned and operated the Reit Fuel Co. in Norristown, PA. Charles was a US Army veteran of WW II, serving from 1943 to 1945 in the 112th Infantry Regiment. He participated in the Northern France, Rhineland and Central European Campaigns. He was wounded and became a prisoner of war in Germany in November of 1944, while a member of the famous “Bloody Bucket” Army group. He was liberated in the spring of 1945. Ed was awarded a Purple Heart, American Theatre Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Born in Norristown, PA on December 29, 1924, he was a son of the late John D. and Ethel Mae (Light) Smith. He was the husband of the late Lorraine P. (Lippincott) Smith, who died in 2000; and the late Doreen M. (Chapman) Smith, who died in 2010. Surviving is his loving family including a daughter, Linda A. Blandford and her husband, Edward M., of Inwood, WV; five grandchildren: Timothy S. & Michael E. Blandford and Christopher C., Bethann & Rebecca Smith; a brother, Vernon Smith; two sisters, Laura Williamson and Shirley William and her husband, Charles; and many other loving family members. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffery A. Smith, who died in 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to Ed’s Funeral Service at The Bacchi Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd., 805 DeKalb St. (Rt. 202), Bridgeport, PA 19405 on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 11:00 am. His viewings will be on Sunday evening from 6 to 8:00 pm and Monday morning from 10 to 10:50 am, both at the funeral home. Interment will be in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ed’s memory to the Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
