Daniel R. “Dan” King Ph.D., passed away suddenly in Japan on Sunday, May 1, 2022. He was 33. Dan attended North Penn schools, graduating in 2006 and Penn State University where he earned a B.SC in Polymer Science and Engineering in 2010. Dan then earned his Ph.D. in the same field at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2015. He worked as Assistant Professor at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan for the past seven years. His research was widely praised for its creativity, and his published work for his ability to communicate clearly and simply. Dan enjoyed traveling for work and leisure. He spoke at conferences in the US, England, France, The Netherlands, South Korea, China and Japan. Vacations were spent in various parts of the world such as Thailand, Guam, Mongolia, Iceland, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Brunei, Bali, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau and the Phillipines. He enjoyed meeting new people and learning their cultures and cuisine. In his spare time in Sapporo, winters were spent skiing and skating; in spring and summer he was hiking and scuba diving. He was constantly cooking or going out to eat with his many friends and their families. Born in Norristown, PA on July 25, 1988, he was the son of Steven G. and Anna (Homa) King. Also surviving is a sister Mary at home; paternal grandmother, Adele King of Worcester; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be greatly missed by longtime girlfriend and travel companion of 12 years, Jess Chanthad of Bangkok, Thailand. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, David D. King; his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary Homa; and his Uncle Mike. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, June 6, 2022 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 1601 Derstine Rd., Hatfield, PA from 9:15 to 10:45 am,with Eulogy starting at 10:50am. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, with Pastor Rev. John C. Nguyen “Father Chung” as the celebrant. Services will be livestreamed starting at 10:50 am; go to stmariagoretti.net. Interment will immediately follow Mass at SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, 439 W. Church Rd., King of Prussia, PA, with Rev. Dr. Ronald Popivchak leading with prayers.
