Dolores F Mulrooney

October 5, 1924 — April 3, 2017

DOLORES F. MULROONEY AGE: 92 * WILMINGTON Dolores Favez Mulrooney, 92, passed away peacefully April 3, 2017, as the sun dawned on a soft spring day, following loving leave-takings by her extended family in her final days. Born to Louis and Mildred (Dillman) Favez on October 5, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was raised in St. Louis and Appleton, Wisconsin, where she graduated from Appleton High School in 1942. While working in Chicago during World War II, she met and fell in love with a handsome young U.S. Army officer, Joseph P. Mulrooney, of Wilmington. They were married on April 25, 1946, and Joe took her home to Wilmington, where they raised a family of five children. A devoted homemaker, Dolores also found time for a range of charitable activities, including 20 years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross of Delaware and eight years with her local chapter of AARP. She was also a member of the Altar Society of St. Helena’s Roman Catholic Church in Bellefonte and an active parishioner of Christ Our King R.C. Church in Wilmington. Her favorite pastime over the years, as her many dear friends knew well, was playing cards, especially a good game of pinochle. Besides her parents, Dolores was predeceased by Joe, her devoted husband of 55 years, in 2001; by William H. “Bill” McDonough, her loving companion of her later years, in 2007; and by her brother, Robert L. “Rudy” Favez, in 2016. She is survived by her sons, Robert P. (Tamar Holmes) of Newark, Richard J. of Arden, Kevin L. (Mary Beth Stankevich) of Brack-Ex and John K. (Lisa Russell) of Lindamere; and her daughter, JoAnn M. Holmes (Douglas T. Holmes) of Perkins Run. Also by her 10 grandchildren: Stephen J. Mulrooney, Christine M. Robinson and Patrick J. Mulrooney; Joseph P. Holmes, Andrew D. Holmes, Christopher D. Holmes and Rebecca H. Rosen; and Bridget M. Bixel, Brendan A. Mulrooney and Evan A. Mulrooney. Also by her 10 great-grandchildren: Noelle, Madeline and Silas Robinson; Neve, Katelyn, Cohen and Trae Mulrooney; Calah and Cadence Mulrooney; and Bennett Holmes. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank the staffs of Forwood Manor, especially its Health Center, and Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis Hospital for their kind and attentive care. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Helena’s Church on Friday, April 7, at 1:30 p.m., with visitation at St. Helena’s Dougherty Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Milltown. In lieu of flowers, Dolores requested that you make a donation in her name to a charity of your choice.
