Dorothy (Duncan) Gernert-Vandegrift passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 1, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at the Regina Nursing Center in Norristown, PA. She was 89. Mrs. Gernert-Vandegrift was a resident of King of Prussia PA. She was a graduate of the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1942. She worked as a registered Nurse for the former Sacred Heart Hospital in Norristown, PA and participated in their Outreach Program. Dorothy was a member and past deacon of Valley Forge Presbyterian Church in King of Prussia, PA. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.Born in Detroit, Michigan on June 5, 1920, she was a daughter of the late George and Elsie (Schaeffer) Duncan. She was the wife of the late Frederick G. Gernert, who died in 1968 and the late Wilbert H. Vandegrift, who died in 1982. Surviving is her loving family including a son, Dennis G. Gernert and his wife, Martha of King of Prussia, PA; two daughters, Sandra V. Meldrum and her husband, Alex of Mertztown, PA and Barbara G. Finnegan of King of Prussia, PA; five grandchildren: Bryan, Brent, Shannon, Chad and Bret; three great-grandchildren, TJ, Kendell and Jackson; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by a brother, George W. Duncan.Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Service at The Bacchi Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd., 805 DeKalb St. (Rt. 202), Bridgeport, PA 19405 on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 10:00am. Officiating will be Ray Hollinger. Her viewing will be Tuesday morning from 9 to 9:50am, at the funeral home. Interment in Laureldale Cemetery, Reading, PA on Tuesday afternoon at 12:15pm. Please assemble at the cemetery office by 12 noon.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy's memory to the Regina Nursing Center, 550 E. Fornance St., Norristown, PA 19401.
