Dr. Gregory D. Williams, 74, of Elkins Park, PA died peacefully at home Tuesday, January 24th. Dr. Williams is survived by his wife of 52 years Lucia (Burnett), son John Gregory, daughter in law Angela and granddaughter Lucie Sue; daughter Nancy and grandson Christopher Gregory. He was the son of the late John A. Williams and Carolyn Jackson, who survives him. He is also survived by his brothers Dennis Williams (Cynthia) of Silver Spring, Maryland and Adam Williams of Bogota, New Jersey; his stepfather Herb Jackson of Syracuse, New York; and his stepmother Lorrain Williams of Teaneck, New Jersey, and many cherished nieces and nephews. Greg has a host of family and dear friends who will miss his wit, humor and generous spirit tremendously.
A native of Syracuse, NY, Greg earned his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, his master’s degree from SUNY Oswego and his doctorate of education from Temple University. After completing his formal studies, Greg began teaching at the Community College of Philadelphia and remained there for ten years. He switched careers and worked the next ten years developing and conducting medical education seminars for a pharmaceutical marketing firm. Greg then returned to teaching as an Adjunct Professor at Temple University until his retirement in 2007.
In addition to his work, Greg had many interests. Thanks to his avid interest in photography, he left us with invaluable visual memories to share forever. He and his wife Lucia enjoyed living and raising their family in northwest Philadelphia, making Germantown and Mt. Airy their home base since 1973. Over the years, the family enjoyed travel in both this country and abroad. He enjoyed a good meal washed down by a very dry gin martini.
His paramount life long interest was in comic books and television science fiction, especially Star Trek and Dr. Who. Over his lifetime Greg amassed a collection of more than seven thousand comics devoted mainly to the super hero genre and various related memorabilia. He also was a trivia buff whose skill earned him the title “Jeopardy” champion, a major accomplishment.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Division of Hematology, Attn: Angela Evans, Manager, 3500 Civic Center Blvd, 13th floor, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
