Dr. Michael Madianos

August 13, 1935 — October 23, 2017

Michael Madianos, MD, 82, of Rydal, passed away on October 23, 2017 at Holy Redeemer Hospital, Meadowbrook, PA following a valiant two -year struggle with esophageal cancer and its complications. Dr. Madianos was born in Chios, Greece, the only child of Evangelos Madianos MD and Despina Koustoumbekis Madianos on August 13, 1935. At the age of 18, he was awarded a coveted four-year scholarship by the Chios Society of New York to study in the United States at Wagner College on Staten Island and left his homeland, friends and family to pursue a life in “the land of opportunity”. As Greek was his native language, he taught himself English in order to pursue this educational opportunity. He quickly became assimilated into American culture, joining a fraternity and supporting himself by working summers as a short order cook on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ. Following college graduation, he started his medical training at the University of Buffalo Medical School. To support himself during school, he took a job at the Veterans’ Administration hospital where he met his future wife Jeanette, a speech and language therapist. He moved to Philadelphia in 1961 to pursue an internship in internal medicine at the former Philadelphia General Hospital. He further continued his training at Episcopal Hospital and took a fellowship in endocrinology at Hahnemann Hospital. In 1966, he opened a solo practice in Northeast Philadelphia. Dr. Madianos was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine. In 1967, he was asked by the Philadelphia office of the IRS to start a medical clinic where he served as Medical Director for 25 years. Throughout his career, he was sought out by patients throughout the Delaware Valley and New Jersey and was on the medical staff at Episcopal, Nazareth and Holy Redeemer Hospitals. Dr. Madianos and his wife frequently traveled with their four children to Florida, throughout the US and to Greece. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, gardening, reading, watching World War II movies, attending theatre with friends, spending time with his grandchildren and exercising his seemingly limitless energy, knack and ability for fixing things around the house- a trait his family greatly appreciated. Dr. Madianos is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanette, their four children, Lorette Cuff, Dr. Evan Madianos MD, Gregory Madianos, and Katina Madianos-Fiore. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren- Evan, Lauren, Gabriella, Isabella, Mila, and Lyla. A viewing will be held from 9:30 – 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 28th at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 7921 Old York Rd, Elkins Park, PA and the funeral service will follow there at 11 AM.
