Dr. Michael Joseph Mastrangelo

October 3, 1938 — December 6, 2024

Michael Joseph Mastrangelo, MD, 86, of Jenkintown, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, December 6th, 2024, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Michael was born in Phoenixville, PA on October 3rd, 1938, a son of the late Nancy (Foresta) and Joseph Mastrangelo. He is survived by his wife Ann (Sunday) Mastrangelo, his brother Vincent (Linda) Mastrangelo, as well as, three adult children, David (Kathleen) Mastrangelo, Mark (Jean) Mastrangelo and Audrey Reynolds. He has four loving grandchildren, Madison, Michael, and Elizabeth Mastrangelo, and John (“Jack”) Reynolds. Michael and Ann were married for 60 years and spent summers in Mantoloking, NJ enjoying time with his children and grandchildren. His Saturday dinners included family and friends and highlighted his grilling skills.

Michael had a notable 60-year medical career in the Philadelphia area. He graduated from Villanova University on a full scholarship in 1960 and The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1964. He also served at the Edgewood Arsenal in 1967 and was discharged from the Army in 1968 as a Captain in the Medical Corps. Michael began his career at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in a class of 10 medical interns in 1965, with a fellowship in 1970 and a residency in 1971, ultimately becoming Chief Medical Resident. Following his residency, he joined the Department of Medical Oncology at the American Oncologic Hospital (one the oldest cancer hospitals in the country). This hospital became Fox Chase Cancer Center. Michael returned to Jefferson University Hospital in 1984 and remained on staff until June 2024. During his 40-year tenure at Jefferson Hospital, he was a Professor of Medicine as well as Chief of Oncology. He specialized in Hematologic Oncology, Melanoma. He retired this year at the young age of 85 years old.

During his career, Michael impacted the lives of countless patients with the extraordinary time and care he gave to his patients. He was on a quest to cure a challenging disease and mentored generations of doctors and nurses to achieve this goal. His medical accomplishments included, among others, the publication of two medical textbooks. He also started the publication of Seminars in Oncology in 1974 with two medical doctors and his medical research has been cited in over 6,500 articles. In 2005, Michael’s portrait was selected by the Administration and Faculty of Sidney Kimmel Medical College to hang at the College and in 2016, he was awarded their Research Career Achievement. In June 2024, he was formally welcomed as an Inaugural Member of the Jefferson Luminaries. Michael’s work in the field of melanoma will undoubtedly impact generations to come.

Accolades aside, Michael would say that his most important achievement were the bonds he developed with his patients and colleagues. The time and care he spent with patients and their families will never be forgotten. We are sure his unique phone style will also be missed; “Hello, Michael Mastrangelo, World Famous Oncologist”.

A private viewing and funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic B.V.M. Church in Jenkintown, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Jefferson’s Melanoma Research Institute of Excellence (MIRE) Fund, Giving.Jefferson.edu, or Villanova University, give.villanova.edu.

A celebration of life will be held in Spring 2025.
