Nicholas C. Pedano, D.O., age 77, of King of Prussia, PA and Jupiter, Fl, formerly of Merion Station, PA, passed on Friday, July 13, 2012, peacefully in the presence of his wife and 6 children, in the hospital.Born on October 12, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA to James V. & (Anna Canuso) Pedano. Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Mary Bernice (Feudo) Pedano and 6 children: Andrea D. Pedano, D.O. (Steven E. Geckle), Nicholas C. Pedano, Jr. (Kathleen Farrell), James V. Pedano (Frances Hackett), Francis S. Pedano (Mary Kate Ruane), Monica A. Pedano (Brian Rogers) and Joseph V. Pedano. Also survived by 15 grandchildren, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent and a sister, Rita Stango.Dr. Pedano's illustrious career spanned over 3 decades. Board certified in general surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He held a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine, a surgery degree from The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Bachelor of Science degree from Villanova University. He completed his internship and residency at the Hospital of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was an attending surgeon at the Hospital of The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and served as the Chief of Surgery for over 25 years, as well as President of the medical staff. He was an attending surgeon at the Metropolitan Hospitals; Central, Springfield, and Parkview Divisions. He was a consultant in general surgery at Suburban General Hospital and a general surgical consultant to the National Board of Osteopathic Examiners. Dr. Pedano was in private surgical practice in Bala Cynwyd, PA for 36 years. He was successful because of his extraordinary surgical skills and compassionate bedside manner. Dr. Pedano's faculty appointments were professor and clinical professor of surgery. His passion was as the director of the general surgery residents' training program at PCOM. He also served as an adjunct clinical professor of surgery, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 2001, PCOM named him professor emeritus.In tribute to a lifetime of service on behalf of the osteopathic profession, Dr. Pedano received the O. J. Snyder Memorial Meda, PCOM's highest honor, in 1999. In 2001, he received a certificate of merit from the Alumni Association of PCOM. He had been recognized with other prestigious awards including the Lambda Omicron Gamma of outstanding achievement in the field of education and clinical medicine (1975), the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching (1993), the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association Distinguished Service Award (1995), and the POMA Board of Trustees Member Award for 40 years of service (2002). Dr. Pedano has held leadership roles in professional organizations including the American Osteopathic Association (member of the house of delegates) and the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (President, President elect, Board of Trustees, Vice Chairman District 10, member of the house of delegates). He has served on the boards and committees of many professional and civic organizations including the Merion Civic Association, Cardinal Krol's Committee for Children's Welfare, the Philadelphia Opera Guild, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Zoological Society and the Merion Boy Scouts of America, Pack #71. He served on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of PCOM since 1988; in 2007 he was president. In 1994 Dr. Pedano served as chair of the the College's Capital Campaign, The PCOM Mission.He was a member of the PCOM Board of Trustees from 1984 to 2009. Nicholas served as an inspiration and role model to his loving children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He touched the lives of so many people during his lifetime and it is truly a debt of gratitude that we owe this humble man for his many years of service. His dedication and commitment to make a profound difference in this world will serve as an example for future generations. He will be missed.Relatives and friends are invited to Dr. Pedano's Funeral Mass at Mother of Divine Providence Church, 333 Allendale Road, King of Prussia, PA 19406 on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 10:00 am. His viewings are Wednesday evening from 5 to 8:00 pm; also Thursday morning from 9 to 9:50 am, both at the church.
