Eleanor O'Keefe Haffner of Bensalem, PA passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 25, 2024. She was born in Philadelphia on March 7, 1941, daughter of Frances (nee Gibbons) and Arthur O'Keefe.
Eleanor is survived by her loving husband Hermann Haffner, and children Andrea Lloyd (John), Marita (Jeffrey Morris), Karin Mascherino (Vincent), Susan Haffner, and her son-in-law Juan Dorantes. She is greatly missed by five grandchildren, Natalie and Max Lloyd, Nicholas and Joseph Mascherino, and Owen Dorantes. She is now reunited with her loving daughter, Lisa Dorantes and grandson, Rylan Dorantes. Eleanor is also survived by her dear sisters, Mary Forrestel and Joyce Smith (Robert), as well as many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Immaculata College, then earning a Masters degree in Education from Temple University, Eleanor dedicated her life to teaching in Philadelphia public schools. She also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at St. Ephrem for 30 years. Eleanor was a dedicated mother to her five daughters, a hardworker and always on the go.
Since her father owned a travel agency, Eleanor loved to travel, take cruises and spending her summers in Ocean City, NJ, or by the pool at Somerton Springs Swim Club.
Eleanor taught us that there is always room for a treat, and Friendly’s ice cream “Sunday Sundaes” will always hold a special place in our hearts.
She cherished her lifelong friendships and her “sorority” sisters. Born with the gift of gab, Eleanor was a social butterfly and had a kind word for everyone.
A bright light with the sweetest demeanor, Eleanor had a heart of gold. She always had a Hallmark greeting card ready for any occasion.
Our own “Miss America” with beautiful blue eyes, she was always cheerful and could crack a joke. Her longtime favorite response when answering the door was “We Moved!” Her lighthearted, positive spirit and warmth will be greatly missed.
Not only did she have a sweet tooth…she was a sweet woman.
Family and friends are invited to Eleanor’s viewing on Thursday, February 1st from 10:00 to 10:45 am at St. Ephrem Catholic Church located at 5400 Hulmeville Road, Bensalem, PA. Funeral mass will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem.
