Emily Shachter

March 8, 1930 — December 29, 2019

Shachter Emily (nee Schneider), passed away December 29, 2019 at the age of 89. Emily was born on March 8, 1930 International Women’s Day, widely celebrated in Europe. Her father, Isidor Schneider, originally from Galicia, came to the USA at the age of 12. Her mother, Helen Berlin, was born in the USA and grew up on the Lower East Side. Both families were poor, but Helen managed to graduate from Hunter College and held positions as a secretary for many years. Isidor worked for the Boni and Liveright Publishing House for several years. During this time, he published From the Kingdom Necessity and a book of poems, Comrade Mister and ultimately won two Guggenheim Awards for his works. Emily was an only child. She graduated from Music and Art High School and Barnard College, after which she completed her education at the Columbia School of Social Work, where she earned her master’s degree. After graduating, she worked at Rockland County Community Mental Health Center, and eventually became the Associate Director for the Division of Child and Adolescent Services. Here, she worked with all the branches of mental health services for children. She chaired the Unified Services for Children, supervised students and new workers, and helped bring together countywide children’s programs. In 1951, Emily married Burt Shachter. Emily had three children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Services are private at the convenience of the family. Services entrusted to Joseph J. McGoldrick Funeral Home. Jenkintown, PA.
