Eugene E Whelan

Eugene Edward Whelan, age 72 of Sellersville, PA, passed away on August 29th, 2016. He was born in Lower Merion Township, PA on January 23rd, 1944 to Joseph and Mary (Gibson) Whelan. Gene was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a graduate of Loyola University in Baltimore, MD. He had a long career as an insurance salesman, and he had a particular passion for working as a basketball official in both Delaware and Pennsylvania. Gene was a valued basketball player for Haverford High School, the Air Force and Loyola Baltimore. In 1961, his senior year at Haverford, he played in the inception year of the A.C. Donofrio Tournament, in Conshohocken. He remained connected for over 50 years. He spent years of involvement, in the Greater Philadelphia basketball community, helping to mentor and promote developing athletes. Gene was also an accomplished golfer, holding the title of Club Champion for many years at Indian Valley Country Club, Telford, PA. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Charles Whelan, by only one week. Gene is survived by his partner, Judith Deming; daughter, Tara Whelan, son-in-law, Devin Lulu; son, Brent Whelan; grandchildren, Brent and Katie Whelan; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Lynn Whelan and to Mike and Mary Lou Galante for their friendship and support. Interment and memorial celebration will be private.
