George H. Koerner

George H. Koerner, 89, passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA. He would have celebrated his 60th year with his wife, Romayne M. (Hydeck) Koerner in January. George was a lifelong farmer and resident of Newton Twp., being born at his family residence on August 2, 1922. He was a son of the late George S. and Inez (Coon) Koerner. George was a Railroad Engineer with DL&W, Erie Lackawanna, and Conrail railroads, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Countryside Community Church, formerly the Newton United Methodist Church, where he was a lay leader for many years and he attended Clarks Summit United Methodist Church. He graduated from Newton-Ransom High School, Class of 1940 and attended Keystone Junior College. George was a founding member and 1st president of the Newton-Ransom Volunteer Fire Company and was a 50 year Master Mason of Acacia Lodge 579 in Taylor. He was a committee man for the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 158 in Clarks Summit. Forest Lake Council Boy Scouts of America held numerous camporees on George's farm in Newton during the late 60's and 70's. He loved anything to do with farming his land but most importantly he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle and will be missed by all who knew him. Surviving are his loving family in addition to his wife; a son, Gary H. Koerner and wife Diane, Monclova, Ohio; a daughter, Pamela J. Wood and husband Roger, Moscow; four grandchildren: Heather Cucculelli and her husband, Joseph, Joshua Koerner, Devin and Kyle Wood; a great grandson, Roman Cucculelli; and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by a brother, Roger Koerner and a sister, Genevieve Huggler. George's Funeral Service will be held at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit, PA 18411 on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 10 am. The service will be held by the Rev. Judith M. Wanck, Pastor.Internment will be private at the request of his family.
