George Ivory Matthews

George Ivory Matthews, 86, of Dresher, PA passed away surrounded by his family on February 26, 2025. George was born in Metter, GA on September 18, 1938, a son of the late Georgia (Boyd) and George Matthews. He was the eldest son of this union. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Rose (Smith) Matthews and loving children, Audra Griner (Calvin) and Neill Matthews.

George was educated in Philadelphia public schools culminating with graduation from Overbrook High School, West Philadelphia in 1957. He met his wife Rose while they both worked at Joseph H. Cohen Clothing Factory. They married in 1961, and shortly after he was drafted into the United States Army. He often shared fond memories of his time working in Supply at Ft Hood.

George was employed with U.S. Postal Service for a short time but ultimately followed his father’s footsteps and became a longshoreman. He also worked in Safety at Lavino Shipping Company. A proud member of the International Longshoreman’s Association, he retired in 2018.

George was an avid sports fan and supported the Philadelphia home teams. He also loved cars, especially sports cars and could often quote details about various models. He often spent time checking out the televised Mecum auto auctions and old western movies. A music lover, he enjoyed the Sounds of Philadelphia. Some of his favorite groups include the Spinners, Harold Melvin & Blue Notes, O’Jays as well as smooth jazz.

In addition to his wife and children he will be dearly missed by many cousins and family friends.

George was preceded in death by his father George Matthews, mother Georgia (Boyd) Matthews and his brothers Eugene and Johnny Matthews.
