Jeanne F. Sweeney

6/19/1947 – 7/31/2025

Jeanne F. Sweeney transitioned peacefully in her home on July 31, 2025. She is survived by her devoted children Cheryl, Stacey (Tina Mize Sweeney), and Brian; her treasured grandchildren, Logan and Morgan, and countless cherished friends.

Jeanne was born and spent most of her life in Philadelphia, spending the last decade in Jenkintown. She met and married her Frankford High School sweetheart, Bill, and they were blessed to have a marriage spanning over 56 years. Their adoring and rock solid relationship was the model for many, and their undying love for one another will forever be an inspiration.

Jeanne traveled with Bill as they began their time serving the Navy. She had her first baby the day Bill was sent to Vietnam, and her second in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. She was immensely proud of her husband’s service to our country and supported him endlessly.

As they found their way back to Philadelphia to start their lives outside of the service, Jeanne began her nursing career which spanned decades. She had a brilliant mind for medicine and adored working alongside her favorite family practitioner. Their third child, and only son, was to complete the family soon after. Jeanne supported Bill as a career Philadelphia firefighter, through the day and night shifts, and everything in between. Jeanne was the ultimate model for a devoted wife and mother.

Jeanne always wanted a family, and she dedicated her life to hers. Home cooked meals, summer vacations at the shore and the Poconos, homemade pizza nights, joy and love filled holidays and birthdays, memorable trips to Disney – they always had fun being together. Jeanne was diligent about finances and prioritized what was important. She gave her family all she had and a beautiful life was the result.

Jeanne was an avid reader and tea lover, passionate about women’s rights and reproductive choice, a staunch supporter of the candidates she believed in and moving our country towards a future she so strongly believed was possible. She loved music, birds, and trees and spending time with her loved ones and friends. She had strong beliefs and was an inspiration in the way she tirelessly worked for what she believed in. She dedicated countless hours to volunteer work in schools and community organizations as well as political candidates and women’s issues. Her family will forever be proud of the way she showed up in the world and fought for what was right.

Some of Jeanne’s happiest moments were spent at the shore with her beloved grandchildren, to whom she was completely devoted and loved with her entire heart and soul. She loved being on the beach with them, supporting their arcade endeavors, funding many ice cream trips, and browsing the shops. A walk through the toy store or book store with Oma was always an experience to treasure. She loved theater and ignited the same appreciation and love in her grandchildren, delighting in sharing many musicals and ballets in town together. She was so proud to see her granddaughter on stage as she brought her own love of theater to life. She was always on the sidelines supporting Logan through his baseball games and Morgan through her softball games. She was that kind of mom - she never missed anything. She would arrange her schedule around being there for her kids’ events, and she continued that in her favorite role of Oma. Jeanne blossomed in her role as Oma, and her love and devotion to her grandchildren was truly magnificent to witness.

Jeanne retired after decades of working for the Philadelphia School District, where she had found treasured friends along the way, and made a real difference in the lives of the staff and children she worked with. She was dedicated and worked hard her all her life. Jeanne gave 100 percent to everything she did.

Jeanne was the most thoughtful supportive person many knew. Her kindness knew no bounds. She was famous for her thank you notes, and believed so strongly in telling people when they made a difference. She sent gifts and notes to all who touched her life. She never stopped thinking of others and freely shared how she felt about them. Jeanne made a real difference in the world, through the way she poured out her spectacular love and shared her beautiful light with all who she came in contact with. She touched so many lives and made things better for so many people. She was a model for how to live a good and honorable life. She was a model for how to share appreciation and “let people know how you feel about them”. She was loved by so many and will be missed forever. Her family will work to carry on her legacy and show up in the world the way she did to honor her always.
