Joan M. Montrella

Montrella, Joan M. (nee McDermott), 83, of Oreland, PA, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017. Born on March 4, 1934 in Abington, PA, she was the daughter of the late Sarah (Logan) and Joseph McDermott. Sister to the late Marie Richardson. Joan attended Notre Dame Catholic Girls High School, Wyncote PA, graduating with honors in 1951. She then worked as an executive secretary at the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. She was married to her beloved husband, Theodore (Ted) for 61 years, and she was devoted to her family. She was an office manager at Jenkintown Day Nursery for 11 years, where she was known as “Miss Joan”. Joan was always very active in many aspects of parish life at Holy Martyrs Church, volunteering in the parish school library, working at annual church carnivals and Christmas bazaars, and serving as a Holy Duster. Joan loved books and music, the seashore, beautiful flowers and all things Irish. Above all else, she cherished times with her family, and she especially loved laughing with her grandchildren, to whom she was Nana. Joan is survived by her husband, Ted; her children, Ted, Mary Waybill (Peter), Karen Hennessy (the late James) and Eileen Doran (Peter); her 11 grandchildren; and her sister, Sally McDermott. A visitation will be on Mon. June 19, 2017 from 10:30-11:20 am and funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 am, both at Holy Martyrs Church 120 Allison Rd. Oreland, PA 19075.
