John E. Stevens, of Upper Merion, passed away Thursday April 25, 2024 at the age of 88, in the care of Serenity Hospice.
Son of the late Arthur W. and Hazel (Peck) Stevens, John was born at home in Oberlin, Swatara Township, PA on July 6, 1935, where he was also raised. He graduated from Swatara Township High School where he played baseball, basketball and was football quarterback. He attended Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia and joined the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity where he gained an appreciation for musical theatre, acting and directing dance. It was here in Philadelphia where John met his wife of 67 years and started his family while completing his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He served as a Reconnaissance Officer in the U.S. Army and worked the majority of his career for General Electric & Lockhead Martin. He was a good provider for his large family, served as Boy Scout Leader to his sons, enjoyed trains, travelling, playing golf, genealogy, guitar/banjo, photoshopping, making funny videos for his grandchildren, driving through Valley Forge Park, listening to jazz and celebrations with his family.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Terry (Freyvogel) Stevens, six children Suzanne Butler (Jack), Michael Stevens, David Stevens (Christine), Phillip Stevens, Robert Stevens, Laura Bednar (Joseph), and daughter-in-law Lynda Stevens. He has eight grandchildren Shannon Butler, Amber Butler, Emily Kerins (William), William Stevens, Matthew Stevens, Ana Slack (Bryce), Jenna Bednar, and Alexandra Bednar, step grandsons Eric Butler (Lynn) and Andrew Musetti, eight great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his brother William Stevens, daughter Diane Stevens and grandson Jeremy Butler.
There will be a luncheon to celebrate John’s life at 3pm on Saturday May 4th at 777 Champlain Drive, King of Prussia, PA.
