Joseph Francis Garraty

Garraty, Joseph F., age 90, passed away on August 20, 2020 at his residence in Audubon. US Army Vet. Beloved husband of Ann Marie (nee Fleming), dear father of Joanne; brother of Francis, Alice, Robert, James, Eugene, Richard, Sissy, Raymond, and William. Grandfather of four and great-grandfather of five. Joseph was the oldest of the ten children of Joseph A. and Marguerite Garraty. He attended West Catholic High School, leaving in 1945 at age 15 to help support the large Garraty family as a clerk with Johnson and Higgins Ins. Brokers. In 1948, Mr. Garraty enlisted in the U.S. Army after receiving his top secret clearance assignment after basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC. He was assigned to the 20th signal air-ground liaison company at Ft. Bragg, NC with the outbreak of the Korean Conflict on June 25, 1950. He arrived in Taegu at the point of the Pusan Permimeter on his 21st birthday. He spent eighteen months in Korea as a corps communication operations planner at 1st corps, rising from the rank of Corporal to Master Sergeant. He earned six awatds during this time in Korea, including the Bronze Star. After earning his GED he joined Beneficial Corp in June of 1952 as a Manager Trainee and retired in 1987 having been assigned to a variety of management positions in most parts of the company including its subsidiary's; Speigel Catalog, Midland Electronics and Western Auto Supply Co. He retired as Senior VP Director in 1987. He was a member of the Five Person Operating Committee. He married Ann Marie Fleming in 1954. Family and friends are invited to attend Joseph's Funeral Mass on Saturday, August, 29, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 1260 S. Trooper Rd. Norristown, PA 19403. Inurnment will take place in Washington Crossing National Cemetery on a different day. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, made out to Holy Family Home 5300 Chester Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19143. Arrangements are by Szpindor-Meyers Funeral Home, Trooper, PA. Condolences may be made to the family at www.Meyersfh.com.
