Karen Marie Dennison,2nd daughter born to Julius and Frances Cuspud on September 7th 1964, little sister to Julie Ann, and later older sister to two brothers; Christon Julius and Cornel Bryan. Raised in West Philadelphia, Karen was baptized at St. Rose of Lima Parish, where she later attended elementary school until High School. She attended West Catholic Girls High School, in the graduating class of 1982. During this time Karen was very active and joined a number of clubs and organizations. She also enjoyed playing viola in the school’s orchestra. She worked as a volunteer at Children’s Hospital where she was part of the candystripper team. Karen was often acknowledged for the kindness she showed patients and hospital staff alike.
Following graduation Karen proudly joined the United States Air Force where she ranked Technical Sergeant. She served 15 years. Her Information Management career placed her over a 1345 Student Squadron, Special Operation School and Noncommissioned Officer Academy. Along with this Karen was also assigned as an Air Force Aid Officer where she disbursed over 75K in no interest loans and grants and served as Interim Financial Counsel for the Base.
During this time Karen married Terry Dennison and from their union 3 boys were born, Terry, Jr, Danzel and Corey. They started their family in Florida and later moved to Sumter, South Carolina. Now a mother, Karen's spirit of kindness and giving increased. She was actively involved in PTA at her sons’ schools and was strongly committed to ensuring they received a good education. Karen always felt the importance of supporting any volunteer organization that helps promote the growth and well-being of her children. Karen also discovered her love for crafts and began to indulge in various crafting projects. She would bake a cake, cookies or any other sweet treat at request. Her Aunt Louise and cousin Shad would always affectionately refer to her as the soulful Betty Crocker.
Karen retired in 1996 from the Air Force with exemplary service. After her retirement from, she was employed at Central Carolina assisting students with their administrative needs and later worked as an Administrative Assistant for H & R Block for three years.
Karen also actively participated in many Military and Veterans Affairs programs often receiving accommodations for her service. Karen was a continuous learner taking numerous classes. She graduated and received her certification from Ashworth College in Healthcare Management and Administration. Continuing her education in this field, she later returned to school and received her Bachelors of Science from St. Leo University and later went on to start a masters program. With education she wanted to set an example for her sons to get a college education (very important to her); which all of them did.
In 2005, Karen was diagnosed with Scleroderma. Although Scleroderma presented setbacks, Karen and Corey returned to Philadelphia to be closer to family and friends who could offer the support necessary for her recovery following her separation from her former husband; which she did receive in abundance.
She quoted a Bible story The Gift of the Talents; “Our God gives us all a unique set of talents to help contribute to our life and others. By using these talents we say thank you to God and we are able to find our true calling and how we fit into the Lord’s World.
Karen enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends. She also traveled with her son Corey to destinations of her choice. Despite bouts with her illness, she never missed attending concerts, Broadway plays, or shopping trips.
