Leon “Lon” Lewis Newman, Jr., age 92, formerly of Norristown and Mont Clare, PA, and most recently of Birdsboro, PA, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Pottstown Hospital in Pottstown, PA.
Born on February 12, 1934 in Pottstown, PA, Lon was a son of the late Bessie (Dewees) and Leon Lewis Newman, Sr.
Lon proudly served his country as a United States Naval Marine during the Korean War. Following his military service, he was a hardworking man who spent 35 years working as a welder for Corsons Quarry in Plymouth Meeting and served some time as an officer for Teamsters. Throughout his life, he also worked as a plumber on the side and was once employed by Stroehmann. In addition, Lon worked part-time for the East Norriton Police Department, where he continued working until the remarkable age of 80.
Lon was formerly a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Phoenixville, PA. He was a member of the Norristown VFW, the Birdsboro VFW, and the American Legion, Bridgeport Fire Co. #1 and Good Will Fire Company. He was also a life member of the Norristown Maenner-Chor Club, where he served as Entertainment Chairman. He enjoyed attending Eagles game with his friend, Chuck. His many years of involvement in local organizations and his dedication to his community were an important part of his life.
Lon married his beloved wife, Dorothy “Dot” Helen (McCabe) Newman on April 17, 1956 and was married for 58 years before her passing in 2014.
Lon is survived by his daughter, Cynthia N. Boraten; his son, Leon L. Newman, III; five grandchildren, Cody Boraten (Catherine), Alyssa Boraten (Lindsey), Jonathan Boraten, Marc Newman (Lindsey), and Andrew Wolfinger (Tara); and seven great-grandchildren, Lucas Wolfinger, Layla Wolfinger, Giavanna Newman, Jaxon Newman, Bryce Newman, Dominic Newman, and Charlotte Boraten.
Lon is also survived by his fiancé, Shirley Werkaiser.
In addition to his parents, Lon was preceded in death by his two sisters, Lenora Newman and Lorraine Feltner.
Relatives and friends are invited to Lon’s viewing at the Bacchi Funeral Home & Crematory, 805 DeKalb St., Bridgeport, PA 19405, on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with his Prayer Service beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Inurnment will be private for the family.
