Lewis U. Motter

Lewis U. Motter (His family also knew him as Lew or Bud) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at his home in Linfield, PA. He was surrounded by family, music, and lots of love. He was 92 years young. Lew was born on his Grandparents farm, in Germany Twp., PA, on March 14, 1934. He was the son of the late Pearl E. (Storms) and Lewis U. Motter. Lew met his future wife, Carole A. Cowell at Penn State University, marrying her in 1958. The couple had 3 daughters together, who were all born on the same date 3 years apart. The couple had celebrated 51 years of marriage before her passing in 2010. The family lived in Miami, Florida and Placentia, California before moving back to Pennsylvania in 1974. Lew was a Computer Programmer for Autonetics, Unisys, and was a Professor at Arcadia University where he taught the Senior Capstone Class for over 30 years.

Lew was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where he was a member of the church council, taught confirmation classes, led many Bible study groups and loved his time being with his church family. Lew had a deep and unwavering faith in God. Durning his lifetime, he was honored to preach sermons and lead worship services at First Lutheran in California, St. Paul’s, St. James, and Trinity Christian UCC in Pennsylvania.

Lew loved being in the kitchen, often referring to it as the heart of the home. His favorite dishes to make were potpie, potato soup, sugar cake and, most especially, Thanksgiving dinner for his family.

Lew loved fast cars, specifically his Alfa Romeo and Mustang. He loved sailing his boat Sojourner with his wife. He enjoyed reading, writing stories, eagles (the bird), the Swedish Chef and “Animal” (Sorry), genealogy, family history, and identifying spirit animals for people. Lew was a prominent member of the Jaycees in California, proudly serving as State Chairman and State Officer for his chapter.

Surviving him is his loving family including his 3 daughters: Laurie Green and her husband, John, Susan Vogl and her husband, Bill, and Karen Walsh and her husband, James; 6 grandchildren: Suzanne Leva, Spike Leva, Robert Green and his wife, Jess, Jennifer Green, Jaime Green, and Alexa Walsh; 4 great-grandchildren: Amelia Green, Carolynn White, Steven White, and Ariana Green; 2 brothers, Richard Motter and his wife, Cindy, and Kenneth Motter and his wife, Diane; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death is his sister Barbara Gorsuch and his brothers Pete Motter and Bret Motter.

Lew’s viewings will be held at St. James Lutheran Church, 93 Kugler Rd., Limerick, PA 19468 on Friday, August 7, 2026 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and Saturday, August 8, 2026 from 9:00am to 10:00am, with his Funeral Service starting right afterwards. Burial will be in Limerick Church Burial Ground in Limerick, PA.
