It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Magdolna “Maggie” Szabo, who passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 11, 2025.
Born in Somogyszil, Hungary, Maggie and her husband, Marton, courageously escaped Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution and Russian Occupation in 1956, seeking a new life in the United States. They originally found themselves in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, where Maggie worked as nanny and cook for a wonderful family with children she loved as if they were her own. They later moved to Fox Chase, Philadelphia followed by settling in Huntingdon Valley, where they built their home and life together over the past 45 years.
Affectionately known as “Mom Mom” to all, including close friends of the family. Maggie found her greatest joy in gardening, tending to her beloved houseplants, baking Hungarian cakes and pastries, and most of all, cherishing time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A life lesson she taught all of her grandchildren was: “You can do anything you want in life, but you can’t touch Mom Mom’s plants.”
A devoted matriarch, Maggie instilled a strong work ethic, resilience, and love for family in her children and grandchildren. Whether through her nurturing wisdom, the warmth of her baking, or the delicate stitches of her sewing, her love will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
Maggie is survived by her husband of 69 years, Marton Szabo, with whom she built a lifetime of love and memories. She lovingly raised two children: Maggie (Michael) and Marton (Marian). Maggie was Mom Mom to six grandchildren: Dianna Hall (Patrick), Michael Hall (Emily), Erica Hall (Jason), Caroline Szabo, Ryan Szabo (Brittney), Michele Szabo. She was also a proud great grandmother to her four great grandchildren.
In accordance with Maggie’s wishes, services will be private. While she may no longer be with us, she will be felt in the warmth of a homemade pastry, the beauty of a well-tended plant, and the love shared around the table. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Tributes may be left at www.McGoldrickFH.com.
