Maria (Zahorujko) Skrypec passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Pembrooke Nursing Home in W. Chester, PA. She was 84. Mrs. Skrypec was a longstanding resident of New York City, NY. She worked for the Evyan Perfume Co. in NYC. Born in Antoniwka, Ukraine on July 1, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Sasha and Tanya Zahorujko. She was the wife of the late Walter Skrypec, who died in February of 2010. Both were holocaust survivors of the Dachau, Germany Forced Labor Concentration Camp during World War II. Maria is also a survivor of Stalin's artificially imposed famine and genocide attempt. Married in Munich, Germany, they relocated to New York City in 1950 and raised their family in the Ukrainian community located in the Lower East Side of New York. She was a dedicated member of St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church where she volunteered her time to church functions and school activities. Mrs. Skrypec loved music with a passion and devoted her volunteer time to the Ukrainian youth group PLAST. She assisted with various ethnic dance performances.Surviving is her loving family including a son, Jaroslav Skrypec of NYC, NY; two daughters, Genia M. Charczenko and her husband, Walter of Montague, NJ and Luba Somits and her husband, Mark of W. Chester, PA; five grandchildren: Christa, Catherine, Mark, Roman and Lara; a step-sister, Lena Zahorujko of the Ukraine; and many nephews and nieces. Relatives & friends are invited to her Divine Liturgy at SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 519 Union Ave., Bridgeport, PA 19405 on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 10:00am. Officiating will be the Msgr. Dr. Ronald Popivchak, Pastor. Her viewing will be Saturday morning from 9 to 9:50am, at the church. Interment in SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Cemetery, King of Prussia, PA.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church's Sunday School Program, 519 Union Ave., Bridgeport, PA 19405.
