Mary Ellen ‘Maureen’ (Watters) Cunnane, 94, of Flourtown, PA, passed away Saturday January 2, 2021 peacefully, at home. Maureen was born in County Monaghan, Ireland on April 2, 1926, the daughter of the late Ellen (Hughes) Watters and James Watters. Beloved wife of the late Sean. Loving mother of the late Kathy and Brendan and sister of the late Maggie Hughes, Tommy Watters, Gertie Faul and Patsy Watters. While working outside of Belfast in Carrickfurgus, Co. Antrim, she answered an ad for a job in the US and boarded the ship, SS United States. In her words "she danced her way across the ocean" having the time of her life. When she landed in the US, it was off to Baltimore, MD to work as a cook for the White family. After working for the White's for one year she set off with all intentions to get to California. She boarded a bus headed West, but stopped off in Dallas, TX. She only stayed a few days in Texas after seeing the lower pay rate for local jobs. Upon her return East she landed in Rydal, PA where she worked for the next 40+ years in Rydal and eventually in Center City Philadelphia. She met her husband-to-be, Sean, at the Irish Center in Phiadelphia and his very good ballroom dancing skills were all it took for the Cunnane/Watters clan to begin. In addition to the career she loved, as a professional housekeeper, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and beloved Auntie to dozens of neices and nephews. She was an avid gardner, cultivating gorgeous flower, vegetable and berry gardens for decades. She also loved and spent many lucky hours playing Bingo and hitting the Atlantic City slots with friends and visitors from Ireland. She was a member of Queen of Peace Church in Ardsley for 57 years. Maureen is survived by her children J.J. (his wife Sue) and Pauline D’Andrea. She is also survived by 14 Grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. A Viewing will be held 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM both on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Queen of Peace Church 820 North Hills Ave. in Ardsley, PA 19038 Her interment will be at St. John Neumann Cemetery.
