Murl Dee Harmon

MURL HARMON Murl Harmon, son of Murl Denver Harmon and Adelaide Fleckenstein, was born in Spokane, Washington on January 24, 1934. At age seven, Murl’s father passed away. His mother later remarried, and Murl continued living on their farm until leaving for college. He was active in many sports throughout his school years. Murl received his B. A. degree in Economics and Finance from Washington State University, and subsequently entered the Navy. He served honorably as an ordinance disposal officer on a naval carrier. He spent many nights guarding nuclear weapons, and achieved the rank of Lt. Cmdr. After completing 5 years in the Navy, Murl returned to civilian life and married Margaret Hitselberger of Arlington, Virginia. They had five children, including four sons, Mark, Alan, Gregory and William, and one daughter, Carol Suzanne, who survived for only a short time. Murl was an active father with his sons, attending most of their activities, including sports and Boy Scouts. Murl obtained a Master’s degree in Economics from George Washington University in Washington, D. C., and In 1969 became a C.P.A. in Maryland. Additionally, he graduated from the University of Maryland with an M. B. A. in Accounting and Finance. Professionally, his extensive work began in government from 1965—1969 in the Federal Aviation Agency and the Internal Revenue Service. Following this, he worked primarily in international tax planning for several companies, including RCA Corp. in Cherry Hill, N. J., Borden’s Inc., and Unisys Corp. His final position before retiring was as Director of International Taxes with Glaxo-SmithKline pharmaceuticals in Philadelphia. His work involved extensive international travel. Throughout his life, Murl was an avid tennis player. He was always active and enjoyed reading. He researched and wrote a book entitled, “A New Vaccine for Child Safety.” Murl passed away on December 28, 2020. He will be remembered with much affection by his family and friends.
