Nicholas R. “Nick” Fichera passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Suburban Community Hospital in E. Norriton, PA. He was 89. Mr. Fichera was a resident of Flushing, NY, and a member of St. Andrew Avellino Church. He spent time this past year in Pennsylvania at the Landing of Collegeville Assisted Living. He grew up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, NY, was a captain of the gymnastics team in high school, a Boy Scout Leader, and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska as a mechanic. Nick moved to Sunnyside, Queens and studied to be a chiropractor. He had an incredible knowledge base on many subjects including tool making and was a master craftsman. He later joined his cousin Raymond Alonge as a contractor building homes, and eventually worked for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for over 25 years. There he maintained the buildings of the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Park, and continued as a carpenter at Randall’s Island where he annually constructed the finish line for the New York City Marathon. After moving to Flushing, New York in 1975, Nick volunteered for various community services including the Broadway-Flushing Homeowners’ Association, AARP, and the Flushing Camera Club. Born in Brooklyn, NY on April 23, 1928, he was a son of the late Lodovico and Lena (Cacciatore) Fichera. He was the husband of the late Eleonore (Eveque) Fichera, who died in 2003. Surviving is his loving family including a daughter, Lee Ann Torres and her husband, Rene, of Mountain Top, PA; two sons, Victor Fichera and his wife, Liz, of Bayside, NY and Michael Fichera and his wife, Maria, of King of Prussia, PA; four grandchildren: Christopher Torres, Danielle Holcomb, Carina Fichera and Gianna Fichera; and four great-grandchildren: Logan & Natalia Holcomb and Freya & Alaric Torres. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rosario Fichera. Relatives & friends are invited to Nick’s Funeral Mass at Mother of Divine Providence Church, 333 Allendale Rd., King of Prussia, PA on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 11:00 am. His viewing will be on Saturday from 9 to 10:50 am, at the church. Inurnment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery Mausoleum, E. Norriton, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Nick’s memory to the Boy Scouts of America National Council, P.O. Box 152079, Irving, Texas 75015-2079.
