I want to share this information, the saddest in my life, about the man I chose to spend my life with. After 34 years with me, Candis Hjortland, traveling together, laughing together and figuring it all out as we went, there is a void that I will now try to fill with all of the stories and memories that his family and friends share with me. Norman’s death on March 8, 2018 has triggered an outpouring of shock and sadness but more importantly warmth and love. I am grateful for that. Also mourning his loss is his younger brother Bruce and Bruce’s wife Judy; his nephew, Alexander, and his wife, Anne; sisters-in-law Themmy and Linda; brother in law Dave; numerous cousins and many dear friends. Norman is a graduate of Olney High School (class of 1959?) and attended Temple University. He was self-employed as an auto wholesaler and formed lifelong friendships and partnerships. More important than his work were all of the other things he did in his life. He was an excellent photographer, a raconteur and loved to write. As one friend noted, no one could tell a story like Norman. He was very funny and really understood people. He flew small planes, rebuilt classic Cords, was an avid reader and adored traveling. Though he traveled extensively in Europe over the years, I know he loved Norway the most. Paris was a pretty close second. In tribute to Norman, a gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018, at home at 8341 Thomson Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the organization or charity of your choice.
