Robert G. Kenney, Sr., (Bob), passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by family and his dear caregiver, Aminata, on October 11th, 2021. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday on September 8. Born in 1931 to the parents of Edward P, Sr. and Gladys D (Miller), Bob grew up in the Philadelphia area – Drexel Hill, Germantown and West Oak Lane neighborhoods – with his older brother, Edward (Ted), and younger brother, Thomas (Tom), both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up quickly and learned how to be a responsible, caring provider at a young age when his father sadly passed away at age 45, and his brothers were drafted during World War II. He attended West Catholic High School and worked a number of jobs throughout his academic schooling, including as a disc jockey for a local Philadelphia radio station. He went on to pursue his investment trader’s license taking courses at St. Joseph’s and Villanova Universities and became an investment broker for Janney Montgomery Scott, where he worked for 50 years until his retirement in 2004. In 1967, Bob married his beloved Madeleine, who he had courted at his brother Tom’s wedding, and went on to have three sons Robert, Jr. (Bob), James (Jim) and Brian. The family grew up in Rydal, Pa. and were active members of St. Hilary of Poitiers parish where Bob served as a eucharistic minister, lector and offertory collector, and as a member of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, in addition to many other activities. When Bob wasn’t spending time with his family, he enjoyed playing tennis with friends and co-workers, rooting for Philadelphia sports teams like the Phillies, fishing and playing golf, and reading Barron’s cover-to-cover to inform his investment practices. He was a devout Roman Catholic with deep beliefs and served as a regular at The Miraculous Medal Shrine (Philadelphia, PA), showing the strength of his faith even in the most difficult times, like upon the death of Madeleine (2003) and later his companion, Patricia Schmidt (2013). Bob leaves behind a legacy of caring, giving and love that will be carried forward by all those he has touched in life and through his faith, both near and far, and most especially by his immediate family – Bob (Mary), Jim (David) and Brian (Julie) and his grandchildren Ava, Luke, Jude, Colton and Cora – and extended family and friends. A viewing will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 9:30 am followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 am at St. Hilary of Poitiers Roman Catholic Church in Rydal, Pa. For those planning to attend and pay their respects, the family requests that everyone wear a mask and socially distance. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Robert and Madeleine Kenney Memorial Fund ℅ St. Hilary of Poitiers Church, 820 Susquehanna Road, Rydal, Pa 19046.
