Robert “Bob” C. Loughney, Sr. passed away on March 17, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Eleanor M. “Ellie” (nee Jennings) and devoted father of Beth (Kurt) Stieritz, Bob (Tricia), Amy (Brian) Bytof, and Pat (Mary Eléna). Cherished by 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Todd Stieritz (Ali), Scott Stieritz (Jess), McKenna Loughney, Siobhán Loughney, Regan Loughney, Brian Bytof, Patrick Loughney, Joseph Loughney, Grace Bytof, and Sean Loughney. Bob is also survived by his sister, Sister Carol Loughney, IHM and sister-in-law, Ann Brennan.
Bob was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, the eighth of nine children, to the late John and Margaret Loughney. After graduating from Saint John’s High School and University of Scranton he started his life teaching history in Long Island, NY. He married the love of his life, Ellie on June 25, 1964, and they lived happily for the next 56 years until Ellie passed away in 2020. In 1965, Bob and Ellie left their teaching careers when Bob, like his oldest brother Jack, became a Special Agent with the FBI. His career carried both Bob and Ellie to many spots around the country - Jacksonville, Florida, Ocala, Florida, Louisville, Kentucky, London, Kentucky, Wayne, New Jersey. Ultimately, they landed in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania and have been there since 1976. Along the way they welcomed Beth, Bob, Jr., Amy, and Pat. After Bob retired in 1998, he continued to stay busy with his background investigation contracts and private investigation work.
Bob’s true love, besides his family and friends, was Harveys Lake. Bob and Ellie would make every effort to spend as much time as possible at the cottage and truly enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family who would stop by for visits or a longer stay. Many an evening was spent by the two of them and loved ones on the cottage porch solving all the world’s problems. Bob also loved travelling with Ellie and set sail on numerous cruises to locations far and wide.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Monday March 24, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Joseph McGoldrick Funeral Home, 507 West Avenue, Jenkintown, PA. A second viewing will be held on Tuesday from 10 AM to 10:45 AM at St. James Church, 8320 Brookside Road, Elkins Park, PA, with a funeral mass immediately following at 11 AM. His interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Bob’s name may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org) to help support finding a cure for the condition that took his dear Ellie from him, and all of us, too soon.
