Rosario F. Mayro, DMD, DDS
Rosario F. Mayro, 89, of Rydal, PA passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
Rosario was born in Manila, Philippines, on September 15, 1934, the daughter of the late Bienvenida and Genaro Felizardo. A graduate of the University of the Philippines and member of Sigma Delta Phi Sorority, she came to the U.S. where she ultimately became the first woman to complete the orthodontic fellowship at Albert Einstein Medical Center. It was here that she met her late husband (married 47 years), Dr. Julian Mayro. After settling in the U.S, she attended the Dental Schools of Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania, and then began her long career.
She was an Orthodontist who was passionate about patient care and educating future generations. While maintaining a private practice, Dr. Mayro also taught and trained students and residents ultimately attaining the rank of Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and at the Temple University School of Dentistry. For more than 25 years, working closely with pediatric reconstructive oral and plastic surgeons, she supervised, directed, and participated in the care of patients in the Craniofacial Reconstructive Surgery program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. This collaboration spilled over into volunteering her time and expertise on multiple mission trips abroad that were dedicated to treating children with cleft lip and palate deformities, and to training the local orthodontists. In 2008, the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists acknowledged her “lifelong dedication on behalf of the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial patient, as well as her efforts to close the gender gap in Orthodontics…” Her career and dedication to education spanned over 45 years.
Rosario is survived by her daughter Felicia Hall (Patrick), sons Jeffrey (Tonya), Gene (Trish), Gregory (Deborah), and grandchildren, Alex, Julia, Jennifer, Megan, Zachary, Molly, Nina, Owen, Justin, and Layla.
