Salvatore "Wedge" G. Destefano

August 31, 1928 — January 20, 2022

Salvatore “Wedge” G. DeStefano passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton, PA. He was 93. Mr. DeStefano was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport, PA. He was a US Army veteran of WW II, serving from 1946 to 1948. Wedge worked as a drafting supervisor for Trane Thermal prior to his retirement. He was a member of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Bridgeport. A few notable things that you may remember about Sal. He loved Rita, Bridgeport, his family, all his friends, and especially his granddaughter Sierra who could always make him smile. He would even build her swings in the pear tree in the yard so she could play. She brought a joy to his life that was different than anything we had ever experienced and she changed him for what we remember as a stern but loving father into a smiling doting grandfather who would melt into this wonderfully happy person every time he was with Sierra and spoil her with everything. He was Bridgeport thru and thru, never wanting to leave town for more than a few hours. That is of course unless it was for our annual vacation in the Poconos or a trip to Notre Dame to see his favorite sports team play. He was a true fan till the end, wearing his Notre Dame clothes right up to his last day. He also had a second family, The SSS club. Those of you who we lucky enough to have spent time in this dark but wonderful basement bar know well the family that was the SSS club. If you visited the club you would surely see Wedge there pouring drinks, making pork sandwiches, and talking about fond memories. It was a place that time forgot, staying the same for most of its existence. But just like the SSS club, all good things most certainly come to an end. Born in Bridgeport, PA on August 31, 1928, he was a son of the late Gaetano and Rose (Branca) DeStefano; and the husband of the late Rita T. (Lattanze) DeStefano. Surviving is his loving family including two sons, Mark A. DeStefano and Michael A. DeStefano; a granddaughter, Sierra R. DeStefano; three brothers: Albert DeStefano, Anthony “Moe” DeStefano and Carmen DeStefano; a sister, Rita Granese; and many other loving family members. He was preceded in death by a son, Sullivan L. DeStefano; and five brothers: Angelo, Larry, Daniel, Joseph, and Michael DeStefano; and two sisters, Anna Amato, and Marie Bono. Relatives and friends are invited to Wedge’s viewing at the Bacchi Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd., 805 DeKalb St., Bridgeport, PA on Thursday, January 27, 2022 from 6 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, King of Prussia, at a later date. The family requests that everyone wear a mask for the safety of all who attend. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made in his name to St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Shriners Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, or Special Olympics. https://www.stjude.org/donate, https://support.specialolympics.org/a/sl-donate-now https://donate.lovetotherescue.org https://give2.chop.edu
