Stephen Cantwell, 83 of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 24th, 2024. Born on July 11th, 1941, he was the beloved husband of Ida Cantwell (nèe Iatarola), cherished father of Lisa Macsisak (Michael Macsisak), Suzanne Cantwell Birkin (Carl Birkin), and Stephen Cantwell (Rimma Baram), and adored grandfather of Cassidy Hruska (Kristina Hruska), Keira Cantwell, Frank Cantwell, and Hudson Birkin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen Cantwell, and brother, Mark Cantwell.
Steve had a storied career: he served in the United States Army, retired from Sears Roebuck and Company after more than 30 years, and then owned and operated Steve’s Barber Shop on Frankford Avenue for 27 years. Being a barber brought him deep joy, be it giving a grandchild their first haircut or spending time with regular customers and neighbors who turned into lasting friends.
Steve and Ida enjoyed traveling, with their trips to Italy, visits to England, and Caribbean cruises being some of his favorites. From going down the shore to traveling abroad, Steve made treasured memories with his friends and family wherever they went. He will be remembered by all who knew him as being kind, warm, steady, and handy - always looking for a project to do.
A funeral service to celebrate Stephen's life will be held on Monday, January 6th, 2024. Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 am followed by a 10:30 am mass at Resurrection of Our Lord Church, where he was a member, at 2020 Shelmire Avenue in Philadelphia. His interment will be held at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation at www.parkinson.org.
