Therese Sherwood Smith

February 17, 1928 — December 18, 2022

Therese Sherwood Smith February 17,1928 to December 18, 2022.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother Therese Sherwood “Terry”

Smith. She is lovingly remembered by her family and all who knew her.

Terry was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, the youngest daughter of William and

Florence Sherwood. She had a beautiful childhood with four loving sisters. Our grandmother

referred to her girls as her “basket of pansies”. She was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy

and Katherine Gibbs Business School.

In 1948, Terry married Elmore G Smith, the love of her life. Together they raised and educated

four children Sherry, Gina, Patti and Elmore, who, by their example, went on to marry and raise

families of their own. We had a great family with so many memories and stories. Everyone was

welcome, and there was never a dull moment in the Smith household.

In 1962 Terry began her 40 plus year career at the Wilmington Parking Authority, first as the

executive secretary, and then as the Director of Operations. She was beloved by co-workers,

board members and several executive directors; so much so, that when she tried to retire, they

begged her to stay part time because they didn’t think they could operate without her.

Sadly in 1986 she lost her husband to cancer, but Terry continued to work, entertain, and spend

time with her grandchildren, who spent many happy summers at Grandma’s pool.

For the last seven years Terry has lived at Bellingham Retirement Community where she thrived

and made great friends. She was very happy there.

Terry was preceded in death by her husband Elmore, and her daughter Sherry, who passed

away in March of 2020. Terry leaves behind her children, Gina (Joe) Karwel, Patty (Willy)

Sexton, Elmore (Maura) Smith, and her son in law Craig Schlott. She is remembered by her

grandchildren, Jason (Stacey) Sexton, Liam Sexton, Mike (Alicia)Sexton, Shannon

(Peter)Somma, Meghan (Ethan) Vye, Deirdre (Brendan) Mulroonney, Matthew (Jenn) Smith,

Patrick Smith and Katie and Alex Karwel, as well as her great grandchildren, Sabrina, Sean and

Nate Sexton, Kelly and Mackenzie Somma, Aidan and Owen Vye, and Brighton Mulrooney.

Terry lived a long, full and happy life. She married the love of her life, had 4 great kids, a long

and successful career and lived to see 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was

sharp as a tack right up till the end. She always inquired about “how you were doing, and how is

your family?” Terry was generous, funny, caring and wise. Her family and friends have

wonderful memories of our lives with her and will miss her always.

We would like to thank and acknowledge Terry’s friends and the caregivers at Bellingham

Retirement Community and the people from Holisticare Hospice for the wonderful care she

received these past 7 years.
