Tom Conroy, Banker and Long-time Community Leader Thomas Conroy, formerly of Rockledge and Rydal, died May 22, 2016 of Parkinson’s Disease at St. Joseph’s Manor. Tom was the second of four sons born to Irish immigrants, Mary (nee Gordon) and Joseph, and Tom continued a life-long pride in his Irish heritage. Tom was a graduate of North Catholic High School and LaSalle University, after which he served four years in the US Army, most of those years in New Orleans as Personnel Compensation Specialist. Tom had a long and successful career in banking which started when he was hired in 1960 by Cheltenham National Bank as assistant cashier, then moved up the ranks and eventually retired as vice-president of CoreStates. He spent most of those years in the Rockledge branch, now Wells Fargo. Tom gained the respect and friendship of customers, employees, and administration. Tom devoted many volunteer hours to local community organizations: Cheltenham Rotary, Phil-Mont Kiwanis, Jeanes Hospital, Holy Redeemer Hospital, St. Hilary of Poitier Parish and Abington Hospital. His brother Paul remembers the family would be expected to attend every fund raising event, so all the Conroy children naturally remember eating lots of pancakes, hot dogs, and barbecue dinners. While Tom often facilitated these events, he also worked in whatever capacity needed: cook, greeter, server or treasurer. Tom was especially dedicated to the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer and was proud to serve the needs of their community as trusted volunteer. Tom’s dedication to the sister’s mission was enhanced by his hours of dedication to Holy Redeemer Health System. Tom served as a Board Member of Holy Redeemer Health System and chair of various committees within the organization for over 20 years. Tom was preceded in death by his two older brothers, John and Joe. He is survived by his youngest brother Paul (Patricia) and their sons: Paul (Tracey) and Michael (Taryn), also by John’s children: John (Laura), Kenneth (Kathy), Robert (Terri), and Maureen (Frank) Jaworski, also by many great-nieces and nephews. Whenever advice or simply a listening ear was needed, Tom’s door was always open, and he enjoyed his role as mentor and confidant to his brothers, their wives, and all the Conroy children. The Conroy family always lived in close proximity to one other, and eventually Tom moved to the same Rydal neighborhood as brothers John and Paul. Tom enjoyed many devoted friends and colleagues, but his life was especially enriched by his long-time friendship with Joe Mugford. After Tom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2008, Joe faithfully attended to many of Tom’s personal and medical needs, helping to see him through his remaining years at St. Joseph’s Manor. Tom will be missed by family, friends, and an entire community that has been enriched by his integrity, intelligence and faithfulness.
