Virginia J. Diferdinando

A devout Christian and a proud member of the Greatest Generation, Virginia J. (Ginny) DiFerdinando (nee Higgins) passed away on May 16, 2021 at the age of 93. Ginny was one of five children born to James and Augusta (Knoll) Higgins. As a child of the depression, the harsh financial impact on society made a lasting impression on her resulting in her lifelong obsession with prudent shopping and saving. Though she worked to help support her family, Ginny was an honors graduate of Roxborough High School. After her graduation in 1945, she worked as a bookkeeper at Tasty Baking Company. In 1945, she met her first, and only, suitor, her beloved Mario DiFerdinando (deceased 1997). They married in 1948 and purchased a home in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. While living there, she gave birth to her two sons, John and Paul. In 1963, the family relocated to the Cheltenham Village section of Cheltenham Township, where she remained until her move to Gwynedd Estates in 2017. Ginny was employed by the School District of Cheltenham Township for over 40 years ending with her retirement as the library secretary at Cedarbrook Middle School. In addition to her sons John (Joanne) and Paul (Deborah Wells), Ginny will be sorely missed by her cherished grandchildren, Jaclyn (fiancé, John O’Donnell), John (Cara Glatfelter), and Matthew (Caitlin Axtmayer). She is also survived by her sister, Katherine Maley, and her dear friend, Julie Liggett. Relatives and friends are invited to gather Monday, May 24, beginning at 9:15 A.M., at St. James Roman Catholic Church, 8320 Brookside Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 A.M. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in Ginny’s memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
