Walter “Wally” Stutz, 89 of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Deer Meadows Retirement Community. Born in New Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Vincent and Margaret McGowan Stutz. Wally was a 1946 graduate of Blythe Township High School, New Philadelphia. Wally proudly and bravely served his country as a Sargent in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in which he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. After he rotated home from Korea, Wally served his country as a Drill Instructor at Fort Indiantown Gap until his discharge in 1952. Wally and his childhood sweetheart Joanie Lonergan were wed May 17, 1952, at Saint Stephen’s Church, Port Carbon, and settled in Port Carbon, PA where they started their happy life together which spanned 58 beautiful years. In 1955 Wally began work for nine years as a fireman for the Reading Railroad (Philadelphia). Shortly after starting his career for the railroad, he moved his family from Port Carbon, PA to Philadelphia in 1956. He eventually gained employment as a messenger for Brinks Armored Car Service, his career for Brinks spanning 25 years. After his retirement from Brinks, he worked for CarQuest Auto Parts until 2006. In addition to his parents, Wally was preceded in death by his wife Joan, his brother James, sisters Margaret (Sissy) and Sister Anna Mae Stutz, and brother Hugh Kenneth (Kenny). Wally is survived by daughter Mary Jo Brennan (Steve), sons Walter (Pat), Michael (Patricia), Edward (Kate) and Vincent. In addition, Wally is survived by eight loving grandchildren: Kelly, Michelle, Stephen, Michael, Shawn, Katie, Alexa and Alaina. In addition to his grandchildren, Wally is survived by great grandchild Nicholas and soon to be blessed with another great grandchild. And is also survived by a dear friend, Doris Waddell. Viewing will be held on Saturday February 10th at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church from 8:30 AM to 9:50 AM, followed by a Mass of Celebration at 10 AM. Interment will be held at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Langhorne, Pa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local VFW post. Arrangements entrusted to Walter J. Meyers Funeral Home.
